'Jenny Cortez' Fund Established to Help Family and Services Scheduled

A fund has been established to help the family of Jennifer (Jenny) Cortez, an eighth-grade student at Calavera Hills Middle School who died at age 14 on October 2, 2011.

The fund, which has been created under the umbrella of the nonprofit Carlsbad Education Foundation (CEF), will support the cost of burial and related family needs.

Donations may be made by credit card, check or cash. To donate online with a credit card, click here. Notate “Jenny Cortez” in the comment box. To donate by check, make your donation payable to “CEF” and notate “Jenny Cortez” on the memo line. Take or mail your check to , 4104 Tamarack Avenue, Carlsbad, CA 92010. Cash donations may be placed in a sealed envelope, with “Jenny Cortez” notated on the outside, and hand-delivered to the CHMS office.

An open casket Viewing and Rosary will be held on October 10 from 5-8 p.m. at Oceanside Mortuary, 602 South Coast Highway, Oceanside. A Service will be held on October 11 at 10 a.m. at , 3821 Adams Street, Carlsbad. A short reception will follow the service. 

Cell phones and cameras will not be allowed for pictures, videos or conversations at any service. Anyone who violates this request will be asked to leave.

CHMS Principal Catina Hancock states, “This has been a difficult week for Calavera. We ask friends, family, the media and the public to continue respecting the privacy of Jenny’s family and of our school community as we work through this tragedy.”
