Richard McWilliam, Upper Deck Founder, Dies at Age 59

McWilliam founded the sports trading card giant in 1989.

Carlsbad-based Upper Deck trading card company is mourning the loss of co-founder Richard P. McWilliam, who died Saturday at his home in Rancho Santa Fe. He was 59.

His death was announced on Upper Deck’s Facebook page Monday by Jason Masherah, who has been named president of the company that was founded in 1989.

Upper Deck became a major player in the sports industry with innovative ideas beyond a simple cardboard card with a picture on it. In recent years the company has endured tough times including legal issues with Major League baseball and employee layoffs.
