Miracle Babies and YMCA launch Healthy Women Healthy Children program to combat obesity, reduce premature births

Miracle Babies has partnered with the YMCA to launch a new program, “Healthy Women Healthy Children” to help combat obesity in young women and reduce premature births.  The program is an extension of Miracle Babies’ mission to provide education, support, and financial assistance to families with newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

According to Sean Daneshmand, MD, Founder of Miracle Babies, “Healthy Women Healthy Children” offers a physical fitness program and nutrition-education classes to reproductive age women with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above who are planning to become pregnant in the next 2 years or are in their first trimester. The program is being offered at the Jackie Robinson YMCA and the South Bay YMCA as part of a 12-week pilot program that will eventually be expanded to YMCA’s throughout San Diego and across the country.

“Every year more than 500,000 babies are born prematurely,” said Dr. Daneshmand. “A large percentage of these premature births are after 34 weeks of gestation.  Too often, the health challenges of the mother with a high body mass index which include diabetes mellitus or hypertension lead to late preterm delivery. Our ‘Healthy Women Healthy Children’ program is designed to help women of child bearing age to reduce the risk of developing these comorbidities through weight loss and nutrition management.”
