Poll: Quakes, Twisters or Hurricanes—Which Would You Rather Live With?

Imperial Valley swarm and Gulf Coast storm are reminders that where we live is a choice of threats.

Thankfully, last week’s —called a swarm and felt locally—did not lead to a feared Big One. But on the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Isaac did serious damage, and areas of the Midwest are still rebuilding after deadly spring tornadoes. So where do you go to escape natural disaster? Are San Diegans relatively safe—being some distance from the biggest fault lines in California? Pick you poison—what force of nature is least worrisome to you?

I can build for any of the disasters. Flooding is hardest on the community.

Chose hurricanes as there many places that you can live that are immune to hurricanes, not so much for tornados and earthquakes while more prevelent in some places can strike almost anywhere

my family all came from kansas, and i remember one day at a family reunion i asked them all why they all moved out here from kansas after WW2 and in unison they all said tornados and jobs.....they said they rather go thru an earthquake than a tornado and that is one of the main reasons why they all moved out here plus there were jobs abundant then....so myself i would say an earthquake but then i have never been thru a tornado but after seeing what they can do i think it would be a toss up....

At least an earthquake shakes your house down into a nice neat pile, a tornado scatters it all over the county.

having been through all of them at one time or another, i'd have to pick hurricanes.. tornadoes are harder hitting, although in smaller areas.. earthquakes are scary because they hit you with no warning, and can kill you in an instant.. doug

Also having experienced all three, I would take an earthquake.

Earthquake b/c feeling the Earth move is thrilling despite the damage that it can do.

LOL ! Sarah, That is only because you have never been thru a really big one, and add this, if they are ocean centered they can produce Sunami's such as the one in Japan last year.

I went through Hurricanes Carla, Beulah, Camille, Allen, and probably some others that weren't as big when they hit me. I'd choose earthquakes any day because the big ones are few and far between, certainly nothing like living through hurricanes every few years.

You realize that hurricanes and tornadoes can kill you in an instant too, right?
