Pacific Ridge Student Takes Home ‘Best Female Lead in a Musical’ title for Old Globe Awards

Annika Gullahorn, a  Pacific Ridge School senior, took home the top honors of ‘Best Female Lead in a Musical’ after singing "Moments in the Woods," by Stephen Sondheim  at the recent 2013 Globe Honors and The Road to the Jimmy™ Awards competition, Pacific Ridge School announced today.

Gullahorn, with a passion for the theatre, has held a role in a Pacific Ridge theatrical production each of her six years at the school. Additionally, she was a founding member of the school’s A Cappella group, which has won three consecutive Gold awards at the Heritage Music Festival and performed at Carnegie Hall last spring. In February, she was a finalist in the English Speaking Union- sponsored Shakespeare Monologue competition at the La Jolla Playhouse. For the Globe Honors, a competition sponsored by the Old Globe Theatre, Gullahorn overcame stiff competition from performers from more than 30 San Diego high schools to win her award.  In addition to earning scholarship funds, she received an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to compete at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards) in June. In the fall, Gullahorn will join the B.F.A. acting program at Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Globe Honors and The Road to the Jimmy™ Awards invites high school students to compete in one of four categories: Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theatre, Spoken Theatre, Technical Theater and Leading Role in a High School Musical. Winners of all Globe Honors categories receive $1,000 in scholarships.  Winners of the Musical, Spoken and Technical Theatre categories will participate in a two-day trip to Los Angeles where they will go behind the scenes at Center Theatre Group, attend a casting workshop, and take in a show. The ‘Leading Actor and Actress in a High School Musical’ winners will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards/The Jimmy Awards (NHSMTA) competition which will be held July 1 at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. The National High School Musical Theatre Awards is an annual celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theater established by the Pittsburgh CLO and Nederlander Alliances, LLC. The program recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performance and honors teachers and their schools’ commitment to excellence in performing arts education. Activities will commence in New York City on June 26, with rehearsals, master classes, private coaching and interviews with theater professionals leading up to the live awards show where the Jimmy™ Award (named for legendary Broadway producer and theater owner James M. Nederlander) for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress will be presented on July 1.
