A large fire broke out Tuesday morning at a house on Crest Drive, near Birmingham, in Encinitas sending smoke into the air that could seen for miles.
The fire started on the first floor right after 6:30 a.m. and quickly engulfed the second story, according to firefighters.
After the second story collapsed, firefighters ensured other homes in the area wouldn't be damaged by water runoff from the firefighting efforts.
The family living in the house, two adults and three children, were able to escape safely.
The damage to the home, which is now a total loss, is estimated at $400,000, according to firefighters.
Nobody was injured, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
