Students Discuss Important School Topics at San Dieguito Academy's Forum

Unlike most high schools, the Forum at SDA allows students to have input on decisions that normally the staff would only make.

On Tuesday September 6th, students, teachers, and staff members showed up for an after school meeting (The Forum) that took place at San Dieguito Academy. The monthly meeting, which allows anyone to voice their opinions, covered multiple school issues or hot topics that were addressed.

Aram Mahmoudzadeh, a senior at SDA, believes that being proactive in the school’s decisions allows the students to voice their opinions freely and provoke discussions. “The forum is probably the closest thing we have to a government. It's where students propose and debate ideas, and since the principal is there, the ideas are sure to be heard.”

At a regular high school, decisions are made in collaboration with the District Office and the administration at the school. But Mahmoudzadeh says that the Forum offers a way for students to speak up. “Most schools evaluate options and make decisions without any input from students. Being a part of the process is the best way to keep the school going in the right direction.”

Not only does the Forum allow students to express how they feel about certain issues, they have the opportunity to create an accepting culture that welcomes and accepts all students to the school. “Each class leaves its own mark on SDA, but it's our uniqueness that lets us do that. The forums are important for bringing us together as a school, but they also remind us of each others' individuality.”
