Offshore Beach's First Reggae Concert

First reggae concert at Offshore Beach in Carlsbad.

Setting precedence, local bands played music and a crowd gathered as the first reggae concert at  in Carlsbad kicked off after a beach cleanup on Friday.

Amplifiers pumped out “roots music” during the performances of Stone Senses, Old Hound, Steven Prizzi from Fiery I, Matt Berry, Ross May, and a new artist Nick Colon, all who had people bobbing up and down to rhythmic beats on the grass field next to Offshore Surf Shop. Before the music played, the event included a beach cleanup between Cassidy St. in Oceanside to Carlsbad Blvd.

Seen as out of the norm, this was the last thing you would expect in Carlsbad said local surfer Charley Stevens, who added, “This made my day.”

Stone Senses, a well known band in San Diego, headlined the event. Lead singer, Mike O’Gara, said he enjoyed playing at the beach he grew up at and seeing old friends.

“It’s cool to talk to friends I haven’t seen for years,” said O’Gara.

The event coordinator, Ryan Clary, said he was looking to promote his band, Old Hound, and other local talent so he put together the money for the concert by having it sponsored by Eco-Rooted, XL Recordings, and Harney Sushi of Oceanside.

“The music scene in this town is just inspiring and talented and needs to be heard by its own. We’re doing the best we can to help make that happen,” Clary said.

He believes this concert was an extenuation of Carlsbad’s culture.

“I think music is life here in Carlsbad, aside from the surf and beach culture we are so surrounded by, it is a huge part of every one of us,” Clary said.

Unfortunately the music ended an hour early due to technical difficulties with the electricity. However, with the closing music, excitement grew for the next concert.

Clary intends to make a few improvements for the next upcoming event and said it could possibly happen the end of the summer. “The great vibe from everyone is a part of it, it's what gives us the reason to play why and what we play.”
