2 Car Crashes Kill Young Locals in Past 5 Days

A 29-year-old from Encinitas died in Carlsbad Thursday night, and a 23-year-old from Carlsbad died in Encinitas Saturday night.

Two fatal crashes in the past five days have claimed the lives of two people in their 20s.

Hortensia Perez, 29, from Encinitas was struck by a car on Rancho Sante Fe Road in Carlsbad last Thursday at 10:15 p.m. after she pulled over to the side of the road and stepped out into traffic.

According the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, Perez was driving with a friend when she became distraught about her father's death that occurred earlier in the month, attempted to pull over to the curb, but was sticking out of the bike lane when she exited the car and was struck by a SUV.

On Saturday, 23-year-old male from Carlsbad was killed in Encinitas after apparently falling asleep at the wheel while on Interstate 5 south of Birmingham Drive. The fatal accident happened around 11:15 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol said he went off the shoulder and hit a tree, dying at the scene. 

The driver's name has not yet been released.
