21-Year-Old Leads Chase Through Area After Allegedly Stealing $10,000

Police were led on road pursuit from Rancho Penasquitos to Carlsbad after cash is stolen.

A 21-year-old man was arrested Friday after he allegedly snatched more than $10,000 in cash from someone considering buying his car, then led police on a road chase from Rancho Penasquitos to Carlsbad.

The victim and suspect were in a neighborhood near the intersection of Scripps Poway Parkway and Scripps Highland Drive shortly before 1 p.m., discussing the potential sale of the latter's vehicle, when the theft occurred, according to San Diego police.

The suspect, who had a female companion with him, sped off in the maroon Mitsubishi, with the victim following them while making a 911 call to report what had happened, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.

The fleeing man drove to the west on State Route 56 as officers gave chase, then headed north on Interstate 5, Brown said.

Near Cannon Road, the suspect pulled over on the side of the freeway and was arrested.

His name was not immediately available. The woman who had been riding in the vehicle was questioned and released, the lieutenant said.
