Police Say Monday's Shooting is Gang Related

Lt. Matt Magro with the Carlsbad Police Department said a person exited a vehicle with a handgun Monday night and fired at three people who were out for a walk in the neighborhood known as "Carlsbad's Barrio."

The Carlsbad Police Department believes Monday night's shooting incident is gang related. In a press release Lt. Paul Mendes writes, "None of the three victims, however, had any gang related ties. The suspect did inquire of the victims, prior to the shooting, where they were from."

Two victims were air lifted to hospitals with gunshot wounds and a third victim was taken by ambulance after a suspect exited a car and shot four to six rounds at them in the 3400 block of Madison Street in Carlsbad around 8:30 p.m. Monday.

According to Lt. Matt Magro, the three victims, a 26-year-old male, 18-year-old female and 16-year-old male, were out for a walk when "words were exchaged" with four to five people in a blue 4-door sedan, possibly a Dodge.

The victims told police one person exited the car and started shooting at them with a black handgun. Police said the victims were a boyfriend and girlfriend and their male friend. One male was shot in the abdomen, and the other two victims were wounded in the arms and legs. All three are reportedly in stable condition with non life-threatening wounds.

Police have no information on the suspect yet and said they have limited witness information besides from what the vicitms could remember.
