Carlsbad Man Pleads Not Guilty in Toy Theft

Danny Ray Wright faces four years and eight months in state prison if convicted.

A Carlsbad man accused of stealing about $84,000 worth of stuffed animals from a North County warehouse and selling some of them through eBay pleaded not guilty today to grand theft and burglary charges.

Danny Ray Wright -- free on $50,000 bail -- faces four years and eight months in state prison if convicted, Deputy District Attorney Aimee McLeod said.

Oceanside police said Wright got into a storage building in the 4000 block of Calle Platino through a rear door several times since January and stole boxes full of "Pillow Pets" toys.

Investigators found several of the crates of the toys during a search of Wright's Bluff Court home and others in two storage lockers in Oceanside, Lt. Joe Young said.

McLeod said Wright sold at least $11,000 worth of the stuffed animals online.

Wright, 42, will be back in court July 31 for a readiness conference and Aug. 21 for a preliminary hearing.
