Carlsbad Police Sponsor 22nd Annual Peace Officers Memorial Run

The following is from the Carlsbad Police Dept. 

San Diego County’s 22nd annual run honoring peace officers who have died in the line of duty will take place Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m. 

The 2.5-mile run is sponsored by the Carlsbad Police Department.  The run is being held in conjunction with California Peace Officers' Memorial Day and National Peace Officers’ Week. Over 200 officers representing local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies from throughout San Diego County are expected to participate. 

The run will start at Cannon Park, located at the corner of Carlsbad Boulevard and Cannon Road, and will travel along Carlsbad Boulevard.  The participants will be running in a group as a symbol of unity and will be carrying both the American and Peace Officers' Memorial flags. In 2012, 120 peace officers died in the line of duty nationally including three in California. In 2012 the peace officers lost in California were:
April 12, 2012 – Deputy Robert Lee Paris, Jr., Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department·         
August 20, 2012 – K9 Morgan, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office·         Sept. 5, 2012- Officer Keynon Marc Youngstrom, California Highway Patrol 

So far in 2013, eight officers have died in the line of duty in California.  Sadly, in the line of duty deaths has increased significantly.  Those officers are: ·         
Jan. 15, 2013 – Officer Kevin Tonn, Galt Police Department·         
Feb. 3, 2013 – Officer Keith Lawrence, University of Southern California Department of Public Safety·         
Feb. 7, 2013 – Officer Michael Crain, Riverside Police Department·         Feb. 12, 2013 – Detective Jeremiah MacKay, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department·         
Feb. 26, 2013 – Sergeant Loran “Butch” Baker, Santa Cruz Police Department·         
Feb. 26, 2013 – Detective Elizabeth Butler, Santa Cruz Police Department·         March 25, 2013 – K9 Mattie - California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation·         
March 25, 2013 - Sergeant Gilbert Cortez, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
