Carlsbad Police Take Needy/Neglected Kids on a Holiday Shopping Spree

Each kid got $100 to buy whatever he/she wanted at Target.

On Dec. 3, 2011, the City of Carlsbad Police Department and 26 other county law enforcement agencies participated in the 18th annual Shop with a Cop.

The purpose of the event was to provide a happier holiday season for needy or neglected children and to allow the children interact with law enforcement officers in a positive setting.

According to Sgt. Greg Koran, “Carlsbad Police Department has participated in Shop with a Cop since the beginning of the program, sending police officers to shop with the kids and additional motorcycle officers to help with traffic control.”  Participating children are identified by schools, churches and social services agencies. This event is fully funded by grants and donations; striving to raise over $30,000.  Three hundred children ages five to twelve years old will be aided toward a joyful holiday season.

Carlsbad Police Officer Travis Anderson headed Carlsbad’s participation this year and encouraged officers to participate by asserting, “Officers have the opportunity to make a child’s life a little brighter. The children will remember this experience forever.”

The Shop with a Cop event began at SeaWorld with breakfast for the children and their law enforcement partner. Next, everyone enjoyed a special SeaWorld show before heading to Target in a procession of law enforcement vehicles. Each child got a $100 gift card to spend on themselves and their family.
