On Saturday, Oct. 12, the City of Carlsbad Fire and Police departments will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Safety Training Center located at 5750 Orion Street in Carlsbad.

The open house will celebrate “Fire Prevention Week” and “Crime Prevention Month.”

The event will feature live demonstrations including:

  •  Burning house Car
  • extraction and rescue
  • SWAT mission
  • Police K-9 maneuvers
  • Rappelling rescue

Attendees will see fire and police vehicles, learn about crime and fire prevention, hear about the latest evidence technology and trauma intervention, and find out how to volunteer as a community emergency response team member or explorer.

The theme for the 2013 Fire Prevention week, Oct. 6 -12, is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”

“The theme will help spread the word that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home—and we'll help teach people how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place,” says Ken Sugahara, battalion chief for the City of Carlsbad Fire Department. Crime Prevention Month in October is sponsored by the National Crime Prevention Council. According to the council this year’s theme celebrates youth related crime prevention programs.

“The Open House is an exciting way to learn about all aspects of public safety,” said Jodee Sasway, the public information officer for the City of Carlsbad Police Department. “It is a great opportunity to see police and fire units up close and in action, while picking up a few new prevention tips for the whole family.”
