Convicted Child Molester Found Dead in Carlsbad

A convicted child molester who failed to appear for his sentencing hearing last month was found dead Saturday in a wooded area behind a park in Carlsbad, the District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

Joseph Vincent McCarron, 58, was convicted Nov. 14 of sexually abusing the daughters of a woman he dated. A jury also convicted McCarron of multiple- victim allegations, which could have brought a maximum sentence of 165 years to life in prison, prosecutors said.

McCarron was free on $500,000 bail when he failed to appear for sentencing, setting off a two-week manhunt by the Fugitive Task Force of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office positively identified the body found in Carlsbad last weekend as that of the defendant.

The Medical Examiner has not released the official cause of death.
