A three-alarm fire tore through an apartment complex just south of Westfield Plaza Camino Real late Wednesday afternoon, damaging 16 units.
The blaze in the 2300 block of Hosp Way in Carlsbad was reported shortly before 4 p.m., a dispatcher said.
Kristina Ray with the city of Carlsbad said the people inside three units directly affected by the fire were home when the blaze broke out and were evacuated safely.
The American Red Cross set up a shelter at Carlsbad High School to help as many as 28 displaced residents of the three-story complex.
Crews had the flames largely extinguished within an hour. No injuries were reported.
