Homicide Rate Up but Violent Crime Down in Carlsbad

Carlsbad Police discuss the January to June 2011 FBI index crimes.

During the first half of 2011, crime in Carlsbad increased by only one percent from the same period in 2010. The total number of FBI index crimes went up from 982 in 2010 to 987.

When looked at in categories on the chart, there are five increases in crime rates and five decreases. 

Violent Crimes

Most notably, the violent crime rate in the first half of 2011 decreased by 19 percent. The violent crimes category includes homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. In the first half of 2011, 78 violent crimes were recorded, down from 95 in 2010. Aggravated assault was down 12 percent at 59 in 2011, compared to 67 in 2010 and robbery was down 41 percent at 13 in 2011, from 22 in 2010. According to the , the violent crime rate is comparatively low, reflecting only 7 percent of the total FBI index crimes.

Property Crimes

Carlsbad was enjoying record lows in property crimes in past years, but in the first half of 2011, residential burglary increased 40 percent to 139 in 2011, up from 99 the previous year. Stolen vehicles increased 37 percent to 67 in 2011, up from 49 in 2010. 

Overall, property crime rates increased three percent to 909, from 886 in 2010. Property crime, generally a crime of opportunity, includes burglary, larceny/theft and motor vehicle theft.

Nonresidential burglary, however, decreased 14 percent to 63 in 2011, from 73 in 2010. 

Homicides

Going from zero homicides during the first half of 2010 to two in 2011 shows a 200 percent increase in that crime rate. 

Carlsbad Police Crime Prevention Specialist Jodee Sasway says, “Residents should feel safe living in our community but should continue to by removing the opportunity for crime in order to reduce the risk of crime. The police department has many programs and services to assist community members in preventing crime but teamwork is vital. Working together, we can maintain the safe quality of life Carlsbad community members and visitors enjoy.”
