CHP: Person Jumps Off Interstate 5 Bridge in Oceanside

The fatality left the lane blocked for several hours, snarling traffic on the interstate as far north as Aliso Creek.

A person took a fatal leap from an Interstate 5 overpass near Buena Vista Lagoon thursday, causing heavy congestion along the freeway for miles, authorities said.

The jumper plunged from the Cassidy Street bridge in Oceanside and landed in the far-left southbound lane of I-5 about 1:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatality left the lane blocked for several hours, snarling traffic on the interstate as far north as Aliso Creek, CHP public affairs Officer Robert Catano said.

Traffic remained heavier than usual in the area into the evening commute, Catano said.

I was driving in the fast lane nearing the Cassidy St. Exit when traffic (which was flowing smoothly) came to a sudden and complete halt. I watched police vehicles and an ambulance pass me by me in the emergency lane. After a few minutes, traffic began mergin into the right hand lanes. Police cars were forming a sort of barricade around the emergency lane below the overpass. As I approached I looked to my immediate left and saw the body laying face down in a pool of blood. The ambulance was gone and the body was still completely uncovered. Since I was in the lane closest to the body, and since traffic was moving at a crawl, I experienced every horrifying detail. I immediately shrieked and began bawling. What I saw , was the most awful, disturbing, shocking, sickening thing, I've ever witnessed in my life (and I've seen a lot). I couldn't stop crying. I still can't help myself from crying and feeling nauseous every time I think or speak of what I saw. I've been so haunted by that image, that I haven't stopped searching for information on who this person was, and why she ended her life like she did. I do know that she was someone's daughter, and that to her mother, she must have been perfect. It breaks my heart to learn that she was also someone's mother, wife, friend... I just wish she'd have known that she was someone's whole world. My heart goes out to everyone who knew loved her, and to everyone who witnessed such a tragic end to a stranger's life.
