Man Accused of Killing Another in a Carlsbad Home Heads to Court

A preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday for a man accused in the shooting death last summer of another man in a Carlsbad home.

David Diaz, 31, is charged with murder in the death of 24-year-old Asher C. Freeman at a residence in the 3500 block of Sierra Morena about 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 7.

Diaz, a resident of the home, called police to report the shooting and was later arrested. He was treated for minor hand injuries before he was booked into jail early the next day. Diaz remains held in lieu of $5 million bail.

Police did not release a suspected motive for the slaying, nor did they disclose the relationship between Diaz and the victim.

Following today's preliminary hearing, a judge will decide if enough evidence was presented for Diaz to stand trial.
