Man and Woman Stabbed by Acquaintance in La Costa

A 38-year-old man was in custody today on suspicion of stabbing two people in Carlsbad, police said.

Kevin Rachford was arrested on suspicion of one count of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the stabbings in the 6400 block of Terraza Portico late Sunday night, Carlsbad police Lt. Pete Pascual said.

When officers arrived at the scene around 11 p.m. they found a male and a female with stab wounds, and learned from witnesses that the assailant fled on foot, Pascual said.

A perimeter was set up within which Rachford eventually was found and arrested, he said. Paramedics took both victims to local hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately reported.

The parties in the incident knew each other socially and lived in the area, reported Carlsbad Police.

Jodee Sasway with the Carlsbad Police Department added that the suspect and victims were socializing before the altercation occurred, "the female victim lived at the residence, the suspect may or may not of lived there, his address is under investigation, and the male victim lived elsewhere in Carlsbad.

The Carlsbad Police Department's Crimes of Violence Unit is investigating the motive.
