Man Arrested in Encinitas After Fleeing Through Carlsbad

Deputies, patrolmen and police sought the unidentified suspect in Carlsbad and on Interstate 5 before catching up with him after he hit two vehicles.

Carlsbad police were one of four local agencies that aided in the search for a man who was taken into custody Saturday after fleeing a traffic stop and eventually being stopped by a K-9 unit.

The man, whose name was not released, was captured after he fled on foot once he had hit two vehicles near the La Costa Avenue offramp of Interstate 5, said San Diego Sheriffs Lt. Mario Zermeno.

There was “canine contact,” Zermeno said, that required medical care for the suspect, who was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas for treatment. The spokesman did not know if any injuries resulted from the crashes allegedly caused by the driver.

The incident originated with the MiraCosta College police, Zermeno said.

An officer tried to stop the suspect for going up to 100 mph in a black Lexus SUV, according to 10news.com, but the driver would not yield. He crashed the SUV in a gas station after exiting the freeway.

The California Highway Patrol aided in the search. The sheriffs department was called in at about 8:50 a.m. once the suspect entered Encinitas.

Mira Costa police took over the investigation and control of the suspect as of 1 p.m. Zermeno said.
