Man Hospitalized After Fleeing from Collision

Driver takes off after crash at Carlsbad Village Drive and State Street.

A driver who fled a collision in Carlsbad Monday was hospitalized and expected to be booked on suspicion of drunken driving and hit-and-run, police said.

The man, whose name was withheld, was chased into a field after the roughly 11:35 a.m. collision at Carlsbad Village Drive and State Street and held for authorities, who airlifted him to a hospital to be treated for injuries suffered in the wreck, Carlsbad police Lt. Bruce May said.

According to CHP dispatchers, a large, white construction vehicle struck a car, sign and a fence in a rest area off southbound Interstate 5 around 11:09 a.m. Carlsbad police attempted to contact the driver, but he drove off and crashed at Carlsbad Village Drive and State Street.
