A 40-year-old man struck by a hit-and-run driver in Oceanside last week has died of his injuries, and police today sought help from the public in identifying the motorist.

Victor Macias was struck and critically injured on Buena and Santa Barbara streets around 11:40 p.m. Friday, according to Oceanside police Sgt. Ignacio Lopez.

He was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he died from his injuries just before 7:30 p.m. Monday, the sergeant said in a statement.

Police suspect the motorist who struck Macias was driving a white pickup that sustained heavy front-end damage in the accident.

Anyone with information about the fatality was asked to call Accident Investigator Bryan Hendrix with the Oceanside Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team at (760) 435-4882.

We have had a rash of hit-and-run fatalities and bodily injuries. Anyone who hurts or kills someone and flees the scene should be tried as a presumed DUI.
