Motel 6 Stabber Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

On November 20 a near fatal stabbing took place outside the motel on Carlsbad Village Drive.

A man who stabbed another man repeatedly during an argument outside a last year was sentenced today to five years in state prison.

, 22, last month to assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury. Also sentenced today was Cassandra Clouser, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of being an accessory to a crime for helping arrange transportation for Koppel and co-defendant Hector Cota Isais.

Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein placed Clouser on three years probation and gave her credit for jail time already served. Isais pleaded guilty last month to assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury. His sentencing is scheduled for November.

Deputy District Attorney Tracy Prior said Isais and Koppel got into an argument with 30-year-old Matthew Gobster outside the in Carlsbad Village Drive just before midnight last Nov. 20. The defendants started kicking and beating Gobster, and then Koppel pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim, according to . Isais, Koppel and Clouser ran off after the attack, according to police, who tracked them down because she had rented a room at the motel. Gobster was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but survived.
