Black Friday Carlsbad Mall Stabber Pleads Guilty

An 18-year-old man who stabbed two people in the chest and stomach during a gang-related fight outside a crowed Carlsbad mall the day after Thanksgiving pleaded guilty today to assault with a deadly weapon and other charges.

Javier Benjamin Covarrubias, III, will be sentenced to nine years in state prison at a hearing Feb. 14, said Deputy District Attorney Jon Oliphant. The stabbings occurred outside Westfield Plaza Camino Real at 2525 El Camino Real shortly after 12:30 a.m. Nov. 29. Co-defendant Daniel DeLeon, 19, pleaded guilty to assault and is expected to be sentenced to probation, Oliphant said.

Covarrubias was arrested at the nearby Moviemax Theatres shortly after the attack. DeLeon was arrested four days later. Both victims survived.
