A 21-year-old man sustained major injuries and was hospitalized after being struck by a northbound vehicle on Interstate 5 while standing in the center divide south of Tamarack Avenue early Saturday.

"At approximately 2:40 a.m., a 22-year-old Oceanside man was driving a 2005 Mazda 6 northbound on Interstate-5 south of Tamarack Avenue at 65 mph when he observed an adult male standing in the center divide with his back turned to traffic and his pants down appearing to be relieving himself," CHP officer Jim Bettencourt said."The driver said, as he was approaching, the man stepped directly into his path and he struck him with his vehicle."
