An apparent attempted murder-suicide left a man dead and a woman wounded today at a retirement apartment complex in Carlsbad.

A man believed to be about 80 years old died at the scene. Medics airlifted a woman in her mid-60s to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Her condition was not immediately available.

Preliminary evidence suggested that one of the two shot the other before attempting suicide, Lt. Jeff Chapman said. Both lived at the complex near Pine Park, though it was unclear if they resided together.
