Suspects in April 1 Shooting Death Held on $5 Million Bail

Three suspects were arraigned Wednesday for charges in connection to the death last Friday of 63-year-old Michael Michel Sahagun of Carlsbad.

A man and woman arrested as suspects in the death of a man in Carlsbad last week pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder, attempted robbery and second-degree burglary charges.

Grant McGregor Hunter, 23, and Mercedes Tiffany Yorba, 19, were each ordered held on $5 million bail in the death April 1 of 63-year-old Michael Michel Sahagun.

Gary Dean Gomez, 26, was also arraigned on a charge of being an accessory after the fact and was ordered held on $200,000 bail.

in his detached garage about 1:30 a.m. Friday. The defendants were arrested about 4 a.m. Saturday at the Motel 6 at 3708 Plaza Drive.

If convicted, Hunter faces 56 years to life in prison; Yorba could get 26 years to life; and Gomez up to three years behind bars.

A readiness conference at the Vista courthouse is set for April 14 and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 19.
