An apparently suicidal man was taken into custody at a Carlsbad home early today following a five-hour standoff with the SWAT team, police said. The incident began Monday night around 11:30 at the 7100 block of Sitio Bahia after the man's relatives called police to report a 31-year-old male told his mother and brother that he wanted to kill himself.
Carlsbad police wrote in a press release, "The subject reportedly took a large amount of prescription medication and consumed a large amount of alcohol. He then went to his bedroom where he kept firearms and told his family members that he wanted to have a violent confrontation with the police department. The family members became fearful and hid in the residence."
Shortly after 2 a.m., police set off a diversionary flash-bang grenade and took the man into custody without further incident.
