SWAT Team Searches Carlsbad Home for 21-Year-Old Suspect

Police tried to serve a felony warrant but the suspect ran into the home and refused to leave.

Carlsbad's SWAT team was called to a home on the 2900 block of Austin Terrace at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday to help serve a felony arrest warrant on a suspect who ran inside his home and hid when officers arrived.

Lt. Kelly Cain with  said officers tried to serve the warrant on 21-year-old John F. Mahoney, who resides at the home located just north of Carlsbad Village Drive, but "upon arrival, the uniformed officers were observed by Mr. Mahoney. He was out at the post office box, and he ran from his mail box into the house and refused to come out."

The suspect's family members exited the house. Meanwhile, officers set up a perimeter around the house. Cain said SWAT was called after "the father told officers there may be a firearm inside the residence."
