Teen Accused of DUI Related Fatal Hit and Run in Carlsbad

The 17-year-old allegedly fatally injured a skateboarder in Carlsbad on Wednesday night.

A 17-year-old girl was in custody Thursday, accused of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol and fleeing after she struck and fatally injured a skateboarder in Carlsbad, police said.

The hit-and-run in the area of Palomar Airport Road and Carlsbad Boulevard was reported at 10:51 p.m. Wednesday, according to Carlsbad police Lt. Pete Pascual.

"The victim was located in the roadway along southbound Carlsbad Boulevard, just north of Island Way, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries after life-saving measures were attempted," the lieutenant said in a statement.

Witnesses described seeing a silver Chrysler sedan speed off southbound after the accident. The vehicle described by witnesses was later found at 6550 Ponto Drive, Pascual said, noting the teen driver was also arrested at the location.

She was booked into the Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI, and felony hit and run, Pascual said. Her name was withheld because she is a minor.

The identify of the skateboarder was also withheld. Pascual said it would be released once his family is notified of the death.
