Throw a Block Party Aug. 2 for National Night Out

Turn your porch light on and get out and meet your neighbors Tuesday, Aug. 2, as part of the City of  participation in National Night Out—America’s Night Out Against Crime. 

“National Night Out is an opportunity for us to partner with the community and raise awareness of how to prevent crime,” said City of Carlsbad Police Department Crime Prevention Specialist Jodee Sasway. “Carlsbad is a safe community, and events like this help us stay that way all year long.” 

Community members are invited to participate in National Night Out by turning on outside lights, coming outside to meet neighbors and planning a neighborhood activity like a block party, potluck or ice cream social.

Between 6 and 9 p.m. on Aug. 2, members of the City of Carlsbad Police Department will visit block parties registered with the Police Department and greet the community. Participants need to register their block parties with the City of Carlsbad Police Department by emailing Sasway at jodee.sasway@carlsbadca.gov. 

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. The 28th Annual National Night Out involves community members, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities, from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. More than 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2010. The City of Carlsbad Police Department has been participating in the event for more than 20 years.
