Train Kills Woman in Carlsbad Village

Officers blocked off the area around the tracks Thursday afternoon near Grand Avenue to investigate the death.

A commuter train struck and killed a woman today on a stretch of rail in Carlsbad Village.

The southbound Amtrak locomotive hit the pedestrian shortly before 2:30 p.m. off State Street, near Grand Avenue.

The investigation revealed the woman had walked through the pedestrian gate located on the west side of the station into the oncoming path of the train.

The woman, whose identity was not immediately confirmed, died at the scene, sheriff's Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.

Train service through the area remained on hold in the late afternoon while authorities investigated the fatality, Stubkjaer said.

Anyone with information about this case can call the Sheriff's Department non-emergency line at (858)565-5200.

Omg! Was passing across train tracks on Carlsbad Village at that time and noticed the crossing guards were not coming down but saw the train coming down tracks going southbound. My son and I thought that was odd. Perhaps non functioning guards had something to do with it.??????

Interesting observation 'Yvette'. This should be passed on to Carlsbad Police, not NCTD.

If she was walking thru the pedestrian gate then the crossing arms had nothing to do with it. There should be some sort of guard or crossing arm at the pedestrian gate. It is dangerous.

interested as to why the lead in line indicated 'near Buena Vista Lagoon', when in actuality it was Carlsbad Village?

I was in my truck crossing and happened to look to the right as I was already crossing track. You can't always hear the train in a car!

You're right, Yvette, you can't always hear the train while in your car. I always roll down my window when approaching train tracks. Some trains go through very fast.

I was a passenger on the 1:40 pm train coming from San Diego northbound to the Orange County and Los Angeles area. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this woman. My grandson and I have been praying for the family. So sorry it happened! Joan M L

Just as a plane has a little black box, police dept has accident reconstruction abilities... Trains do also.... Along with cameras on the whole track line at each pass & their own lights, weighting markers on the tracks to keep all trains safe & not run into one another...radio operators on which company owns which line, it's beyond scientific how trains run... there's always about 9 trains on one set of tracks in an hours line of track.. No train can enter into or onto a track unless it is known as clear and all lights are enabled. All trains are federally run regardless of which company owns the set of track. Amtrak is a passenger train, not a commuter train. It's a federal investigation, not CPD. FYI: all train guard arms come down automatically at 3.7 miles out prior to a crossing....bringing a ton of noise & lights, no one is that blind or deaf that should be at the wheel of a vehicle. Being married to a lifetime conductor, I know more than I want to but this is what is called an accident...I pray or she made a choice on her own life. I pray for this family no matter what. The little black box tells ALL.Remember wise people with grandiose opinions & incorrect reporting (Village vs Lagoon/ Commuter vs Passanger)DO NOT MOVE ONTO TRACKS UNTIL ARM IS FULLY UP. The average train is around 800,000 lbs. The train isn't a tricycle that can stop on a dime. Simple physics & velocity people!! Stay off the tracks!!! The train can't stop for your ignorance.

Everyone keeps talking about this woman being in a car, but the aricle states she was a 'PEDESTRIAN'. Perhaps she was depressed, under the influence, deaf and/or blind, or perhaps this was actually just a tragic ACCIDENT. Wait until the investigation is complete before over analyzing non facts.

if you don't stop and look both ways when using this crossing, you are damn fool. common sense would tell you anytime you cross tracks of active train routes, you make sure 100% that its clear and no train.if you don't, well this is what may result from from lack of respect for the ability for that train to suddenly be 100's of yards away and moving quickly. people forget with a train you only get 1 chance, cause you will never have another that's forsure.

I find my eyes a much more reliable early warning system then ears. Look both ways folks! Left, right and left again.
