Train Kills Woman in Carlsbad Village

Officers blocked off the area around the tracks Thursday afternoon near Grand Avenue to investigate the death.

A commuter train struck and killed a woman today on a stretch of rail in Carlsbad Village.

The southbound Amtrak locomotive hit the pedestrian shortly before 2:30 p.m. off State Street, near Grand Avenue.

The investigation revealed the woman had walked through the pedestrian gate located on the west side of the station into the oncoming path of the train.

The woman, whose identity was not immediately confirmed, died at the scene, sheriff's Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.

Train service through the area remained on hold in the late afternoon while authorities investigated the fatality, Stubkjaer said.
