Video: Magnesium Ignites Fire Near Valley Middle School

Officials say the fire started from vehicles left in the vegetation igniting a "classic engine block type of fire."

A fire near prompted an evacuation of students and staff to nearby  and the around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Carlsbad Fire Division Chief of Operations Chris Heiser said when crews arrived, they discovered "vehicles with magnesium engine blocks had ignited."

"I'm not sure why the vehicles are there but this is a classic engine block type of fire," he said. "When magnesium hits water, it causes an explosive reaction."

The evacuation was lifted an hour later. No structures were damaged in the fire and no injuries were reported.
