Brown Elected Governor; Prop. 19 Fails

Meg Whitman loses after spending $141 million on her campaign to defeat Jerry Brown; voters statewide say no to legalizing marijuana.

An expensive and bitter campaign has come to an end.

Democrat Jerry Brown gets another season as governor of California.

Final statewide results show Brown with 53.7 percent of the vote, compared to challenger Meg Whitman's 41.3 percent.

Whitman called Brown to congratulate him on the victory late Tuesday night, according to the Los Angeles Times. Whitman is reported to have spent more than $141 million of her own money on the campaign.

Also, California voters just said "no" yesterday to state Proposition 19, which would have legalized and regulated the use of marijuana.

In San Diego county, all House representatives maintained a comfortable hold on their seats.

In the 49th Congressional District, Darrel Issa led among San Diego county voters, and in the 50th District, another Republican incumbent, Brian Bilbray won easily over Democrat Francine Busby.

Democrat Bob Filner enjoyed a landslide victory over Republican opponent Nick Popaditch in the 51st Congressional District race, and in the 52nd District, Republican Duncan D. Hunter beat Democrat Ray Lutz.

Democrat Susan A. Davis prevailed over Republican Michael Crimmins in the 53rd Congressional District, and in the 36th District state Senate race, Republican Joel Anderson beat Democrat Paul Clay.

Republican Mark Wyland won the 38th District, and Democrat Juan Vargas beat Republican contender Brian Hendry for 40th District of the state Senate.
