City Offers Carlsbad Residents Compost Bins for $40

The City of Carlsbad is partnering with the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation to provide low cost compost bins to Carlsbad residents.

The Solana Center and the City of Carlsbad announced this week that prices have been reduced on backyard compost bins and worm bins for Carlsbad residents, just in time for the holidays.

Both SoilSaver and Worm Factory 360 compost bins are now available at the subsidized price of $40 each (limit one per household). The SoilSaver bin previously was available for $50. To buy a bin, visit the Solana Center at 137 N. El Camino Real (above the Sherriff’s station) in Encinitas, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Please bring proof of Carlsbad residency to take advantage of the subsidy (driver’s license or current utility bill).

Composting is the controlled decomposition of organic material such as leaves, grass, fruit and vegetable scraps. Organics are broken down by microbes and decomposers like worms and transformed into a rich soil amendment. Amending soil with compost and worm castings can conserve water, reduce the need for fertilizer, and increase plant vigor and pest resistance. Not only do composting and vermicomposting return valuable nutrients to the soil, they divert organic waste from our landfills. According to the Solana Center, if all Carlsbad residents composted, the amount of waste generated in Carlsbad would be reduced by 20 to 30 percent. For more information on composting, including bin specifications and workshop dates, please visit www.solanacenter.org.

The Solana Center is a nonprofit organization serving San Diego County. Its mission is to empower students and adults through education and action to become environmental stewards in their communities.
