Carlsbad Schools Protest Budget Cuts with Bubbles

Parents and students from Jefferson and Buena Vista Elementary participated in "This Budget Blows" rallies as part of a statewide effort to tell state leaders "Don't Blow It."

parent and PTA president Debbie Meyer organized the rally at her child's school.

She says class sizes are filled with at least 33 students in a first grade class and with budget cuts that number could increase to 40-45.

"Our kids will get lost in a classroom of that size," Meyer said. “Our state leaders have the power to fully fund education now – they need to work together and stop hurting kids."

Michelle Fourmont who is also a parent at Jefferson Elementary and founder/co-chair of the CUSD Parent and Community Budget Taskforce said she is scared, "If class sizes reach 40 students our kids won't learn."

Her taskforce made up of 150 members and growing meets monthly. On Thursday, they'll meet at the  at 6 p.m. to discuss the budget crisis and innovative revenue streams. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Over at , students and parents blew bubbles and chanted, "Save our school!" as a result of budget cuts. 

Several local business including are stepping up to help local schools. From March 21 through 26, Hoehn Motors will donate $100 from every car sold to a San Diego elementary, middle or high school of the customer's choosing. New car owners will have the opportunity to donate an additional $50 to the school by shooting a basketball into a hoop at the dealership - a tie-in with March Madness. Hoehn anticipates donating more than $15,000 to local schools.
