- Ensure vehicles and equipment have been maintained and are in proper repair
- Avoid using spark- and heat-generating equipment in or near dry brush areas
- Establish boundaries between home or work and dry brush areas
- Perform spark- or heat-generating work during cooler parts of the day, avoiding this work during periods of high wind
- Inspect grassy areas before mowing and remove any spark-producing debris
- Ensure portable firefighting equipment is functioning properly
- Avoid parking vehicles roadside or in dry brush areas
- Dispose of flammables, like charcoal, properly
- Clear any debris off of roof
- Discuss hazards and prevention tips with family members and coworkers to broaden awareness
- Plan escape routes
- Report hazardous activities, smoke or fire to 911
