Seniors: Find Out How to Use the City's Transportation Services

The city of Carlsbad wants its older residents to know they have a low cost way to get a ride to a doctor's appointment, lunch with friends or the store with the city senior center’s transportation service.

The arranges for about 400 transportation trips a month to help seniors to stay active, healthy and social.

Lunch program

Seniors may request transportation to the noon lunch offered on weekdays at the senior center. Those interested must register by calling 760-602-4655 no later than 8 a.m. to get on the bus pick-up list for that day, and should be ready to leave their homes by 9:30 a.m. Residents unable to travel due to medical reasons can also arrange for meals to be delivered to their homes.

Activities and entertainment

On Tuesdays, the center provides optional transportation home for people who stay after lunch for Bingo or Armchair Theater, and on the second Thursday of each month for those who stay to enjoy the monthly movie.

Medical appointments

Residents can request transportation to medical appointments every weekday afternoon, except for Wednesdays. The appointments must be scheduled between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., and must end by 4 p.m. For medical transportation, a 24-hour minimum notice is necessary. This service cannot be used for medical emergencies or ongoing appointments, including dialysis and therapy. There is a $5 fee for the service and a limited service area. For more information, call 760-602-4650.

Shopping and errands

Shopping at Walmart and Stater Bros./Trader Joe’s is available on alternating Wednesdays after lunch, with the exception of south Carlsbad, where transportation to Stater Bros. is available on Mondays.

To qualify, seniors must be over the age of 60, and must either not have a driver’s license or be physically unable to drive, or no longer have a vehicle available for use. A registration card must be obtained at the senior center. Participants are required to pre-register and there is a requested donation of $2 per one-way trip.

In addition to transportation, the senior center offers amenities like a television room, a billiards room, a fitness center and a computer lab, and provides an array of classes and workshops for seniors, including fitness, self-improvement and computers. Click here to learn more about activities and services offered by the City of Carlsbad Senior Center. The center, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, is a safe place for residents to socialize and enjoy themselves.
