Learn More About Public Art in Carlsbad Through Interactive Map

The digital map provides background on the artwork, a link to the artist's website, and directions to each artwork so residents and visitors can easily view pieces they are interested in.

Interested in viewing works of art and learning the stories behind them? The City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office has made this possible by creating the public art interactive map, a web-based image gallery of the city’s entire public art collection and a map detailing the location of each piece.

The Cultural Arts Office staff began this project in 2009. The office worked with the City of Carlsbad Geographic Information Systems division to create the map using images of the city’s art collection.

Peter Gordon, the city’s cultural arts manager, said the goal of the map is to make art more accessible to the public. "We are proud to offer high-quality art and strive to make art and culture an integral part of life in our community," he said. “The interactive mapping system allows users to locate and learn more about each piece of art." Gordon said the system allows people to search for artwork by the artist's name, the title of the work or the artistic medium it was created in.

The interactive map also includes fun facts on local public art, like that the first piece in Carlsbad was the "Crown Lair," created by internationally renowned sculptor Lloyd Hamrol and installed at Stagecoach Community Park in 1989. “Art is all around us here in Carlsbad,” said Gordon. "We hope this new map encourages people to learn more about each of the beautiful pieces we have on display around the community.” To access the public art interactive map, go to: carlsbadca.gov/services/departments/cultural/visual-arts/pages/public-art-interactive-map.aspx
