Photo Gallery: Carlsbad's $16.5M Safety Center Opens

The training facility for Carlsbad Police and Fire includes a 100-yard indoor shooting range, pipes for underground rescue training, and environmentally-friendly features.

The city of Carlsbad unveiled its new eco-conscious Tuesday.

The safety center—which Mayor Matt Hall said was former Mayor ' dream—is located on Orion Street near the Public Safety and Services Center, which serves as the city’s police and fire headquarters.

"I couldn't be more proud of this center," said Chief Kevin Crawford.

The center also has firearms area with special air filters that keep the air clean, shooting ranges and an underground rescue area.

It received praise from Council members Keith Blackburn and Mark Packard who attended the opening ceremony.

Packard described the $16.5 million center as "impressive," and that "firefighters use a lot of water, especially in training. This facility reclaims the water to be used for irrigation."

The project was approved by voters in 2002 and broke ground in March 2010. It consists of a five-story commercial style tower, a two story house, two indoor shooting ranges, a streetscape and classroom space.
