SANDAG Embarks on $200 Million Plan to Add 77 Miles of Bikeways

The $200 million project will complete major bikeways throughout San Diego County with funds coming from a local sales tax as well as the state and federal governments.

SANDAG on Friday approved a $200 million project to add 77 miles to the bike network throughout San Diego County and finish high-priority projects within a decade.

“This is the first time in the history of the San Diego region where a financial commitment of this magnitude has been made to dramatically expand bike infrastructure,” said SANDAG Chairman and Santee City Council member Jack Dale.

“Our goal is to create a comfortable riding environment for people of all ages and abilities so biking can become a viable form of transportation.”

The plan comprises 42 projects totaling 77 miles of new bikeways that would make it much easier for people to ride their bikes to school, work and other major destinations. The plan will also complete large segments of bike corridors that have been on the drawing board for years, including:

  • Coastal Rail Trail – 44 miles from Oceanside to San Diego
  • Inland Rail Trail – 21 miles from Oceanside to Escondido
  • Bayshore Bikeway – 24 miles around San Diego Bay
  • San Diego River Trail that –19 miles from eastern Santee to Mission Valley

Many of the projects call for separating bike paths from vehicle traffic. A complete list of projects is available online.

The bike plan will will be funded by TransNet, the regional half-cent sales tax for transportation approved by San Diego County voters. This local funding will be leveraged to bring in state and federal dollars.

The San Diego Association of Governments the region’s primary public planning, transportation, and research agency. It is a joint effort by the region’s 18 cities and the county government.
