Support for Pedal the Cause Surges throughout San Diego

Malin Burnham, plus industry-leaders Qualcomm Life, Pfizer, Foundation Medicine, BioMed Realty, and BIOCOM join top San Diego businesses and life science companies to fight cancer

San Diego, CA (October 7, 2013)—The entire San Diego community is coming together to support collaborative, local cancer research through Pedal the Cause. This cycling fundraiser for cancer research is supported by a broad range of top names in San Diego business and life sciences.  Leading the charge are some of the biggest companies in San Diego, including Life Technologies, CareFusion, and Qualcomm Life, joined by life sciences and medical leaders Pfizer, Foundation Medicine, BIOCOM, BioMed Realty, and influential San Diegans, including Malin Burnham. Pedal the Cause is also supported by premiere funding partner the Koman Family Foundation, by media partner KFMB, and by Peet’s Coffee.

One hundred percent of the net proceeds from Pedal the Cause will go to San Diego’s three National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers: UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, and Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

“San Diego is a place where people prize physical fitness and strive to improve human health through biomedical science,” said Malin Burnham. “Pedal the Cause gives us an opportunity to pursue both goals in a unique ‘Community Before Self’ event.  I salute all the riders, and I urge everyone in San Diego to support this hometown enterprise.”

“Government funding for cancer research has been flat at a time of unparalleled promise for breakthroughs. The need for private funding is enormous,” said Pedal the Cause President and two-time lymphoma survivor, Bill Koman. “We appreciate the support of our sponsors and every rider, and we welcome everyone to become a part of the Pedal the Cause community in whatever way they can to help raise funds for lifesaving cancer research.”

As Pedal the Cause quickly approaches, everyone in San Diego is encouraged to get involved. Pedal the Cause is open to riders of all abilities with 25-mile and 50-mile courses, and two-day courses ranging from 115 to 180 miles. For those who want to fundraise for cancer research but choose not to or cannot ride, the virtual rider option is a great way to participate in this groundbreaking event. Additionally, there will be ample volunteer opportunities leading up to the event and through event weekend on October 26 and 27.
