San Diego residents now have the only app of its kind in the nation where users can find out information on all things transit related. Touted as the crystal ball of traffic information, the app features tools such as:
- Real-time traffic alerts and traffic camera views
- FasTrak tolling prices
- Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) bus schedules and fare prices
- Advance notifications of conditions that cause traffic jams, such as lane closures or stalled vehicles, and alternate routes
- A text-to-speech function that allows users to get information without looking at their smartphone screens.
The 511 is part of the larger ICM (integrated Corridor Management) pilot project to improve the overall efficiency of the local transportation system. In 2010, the U.S. Department of Transportation choseSan Diego and Dallas, Texas as the two ICM pilot sites in the nation.
As if all this wasn't enough, users can go to the more menu after downloading the app for a chance to enter to win an iPad! Twenty other weekly prize drawings including transit passes from MTS and $50 in I-15 Express Lanes toll credits will be available from now through July 18.
