Surfing Madonna Oceans Project Raises Awareness In Encinitas

The Surfing Madonna mosaic is part of the cultural heritage of the Encinitas beach and surf community. Over the years, she has been moved and installed in various locations, from under the freeway overpass on Encinitas Blvd to Cafe Ipe. Today she stands proudly across the street from her original location on the corner of Encinitas Blvd and HWY 101, looking down and blessing all that pass by her.

This mosaic serves as the symbol for the non-profit Surfing Madonna Oceans Project whose mission is to raise awareness for issues affecting the world's oceans and beaches starting here at home in North County San Diego.

Even if it means just picking up a cigarette butt or bottle cap, the project's goal to help inspire people to re-think their actions and understand their role as powerful agents of change in reversing the serious degradation currently impacting the world's oceans and beaches.

The project allows local citizens to become part of the Surfing Madonna's history while giving back to the community by ordering a 4x8 inch brick that will be placed in the ground directly in front of the art piece.

The bricks (pavers) are a great gift and can be inscribed and customized with any 60 character, 3-line message, name, date and/or quote of your choice for only $150.

Funds raised benefit students working on projects to keep our oceans clean, local environmental programs geared at protecting marine life, disadvantaged and special needs children who share a passion for our oceans, and the preservation and further enhancement of the Surfing Madonna & her park.

Email Bob Nichols at bob@surfingmadonna.org for more information on how to purchase your piece of history.
