Irwin the Basenji/Dachshund Seeks a Loving Home!

Saved in his last hours at an overcrowded shelter, Irwin is thrilled to be living with a foster family in Carlsbad, and can't wait to have a home of his own.

When you meet Irwin (aka "Iggy"), you will find it hard to believe how incredibly happy he is, considering the journey he has been on. His tail is constantly wagging back and forth.  Perhaps it is because little Irwin can’t quite believe his luck to finally be in a loving foster home, where he has a warm pillow to rest his head, and humans that are kind to him.

Less than two weeks ago, Irwin was living on the streets, before he was picked up by San Bernardino Animal Control as a stray in the high-desert town of Helendale (between Hesperia and Barstow). Irwin spent his 2012 New Year’s holiday at the San Bernardino County Shelter, where his days were limited by overcrowding, and the threat of euthanasia constantly lingered in the air.

As a week went by, and he was still in the dark, cold shadows of the shelter, Irwin feared the worst.  Only one year old, his life was about to end before it could even begin. Fortunately, just before his time ran out, the kind humans at Saving Great Animals took him in, giving him the second chance he craved.  Irwin was taken to a local vet, where he received his shots, neuter surgery, and a permanent HomeAgain microchip.  He is now in a loving foster home in Carlsbad, where he has a yard, loving foster parents, and his next meal is not a mystery out of a garbage can, but a scoop of Science Diet in a red ceramic bowl. Yay!
