86-Year-Old Volunteers Thousands of Hours at Buena Vista's Garden [Video]

Dolores Fangon started volunteering with the garden in 1998 and continues to maintain it with the help of students year-round.

Dolores Fangon is a retired teacher, current substitute teacher, and the volunteer gardening guru at Buena Vista Elementary.

"She’s a really nice person and she lets us all have our own mini gardens which I think is a really good idea," said Buena Vista Elementary fourth grader Reya who is growing flowers and leafy greens in her plot.

Fangon volunteers countless hours, teaching the students how to grow their own food and plants.

"I work with the students because I care enough, I want them to know where their food comes from," said Fangon.

At age 86, Fangon said she plans to keep volunteering and is hoping to win a $5,000 donation for Buena Vista's garden, which is currently funded through community donations.

Fangon is nominated for School Volunteer of the Year. The grand prize winner gets $5,000 for their school and one year’s worth of free groceries from Sprouts Farmers Market.

Help get Buena Vista's garden "seed" money and Dolores a year of groceries.
