Army and Navy Academy Names Tim Mitchell Head Football Coach

Athletics is a major emphasis in the academy's educational program, the Warriors football team was undefeated in regular season play last year to become Pacific League champions.

With more than 20 years of coaching experience, Tim Mitchell had been an assistant football coach at Kearny High School in San Diego until last year. He is a Coast Guard veteran and former Navy deep sea diver.

The new Warriors head coach is a graduate of National University where he is now pursuing a master’s degree in the Sport and Performance Psychology program at the university’s Carlsbad campus.

"Coach Mitchell's enthusiasm for football will be infectious,” said Athletic Director Tom Tarantino. “He is eager to provide a positive experience for our cadet athletes."

Now under construction on Maffucci Field is the $10 million Duffield Sports Center complex which includes new artificial turf field for football and baseball, a field house and 800-seat stadium scheduled for completion this summer.

Mitchell succeeds Frank Henry who has left the academy for a new position.

Founded in 1910, the Army and Navy Academy is a private not-for-profit institution that provides an academically robust, character-based education for 7th- through 12th-grade young men. It is the only private boarding school in San Diego County and the only military academy for high school-age students in California and surrounding states.
