Buena Vista Students Collect 27 Pounds of Trash at Weekend Cleanup

One of the most unusual finds from the beach cleanup was a large spinal vertebrae, possibly from a dolphin (Buena Vista Elementary's mascot).

Buena Vista Elementary students gathered at the Grand Avenue stairs Saturday morning for their first annual BV Beach Clean-Up Day.

Armed with determination, plastic gloves, collection bags and smiles, children scoured the beach for a two hour period and collected a whopping 27 pounds of trash!

As each participant returned with their collection bag, it was weighed and trash was disposed of properly. Bottles, cans, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, food wrappers, broken toys and plastic bags were removed from the sand to beautify Carlsbad's beaches in time for spring break.

The grand prize winner was Chance McLees, who collected 5.2 pounds of trash!

Buena Vista Elementary couldn't have pulled off this event without community support.

Boxd Waffle Food donated the gloves, large trash bags and participation prizes. Trader Joes and Albertsons donated collection bags, and Starbucks was kind enough to provide coffee for the moms and dads that made the effort to bring their kids on a Saturday morning.
